Summary

About Shockwave Therapy

Basic Principle of Myofascial Acoustic Compression Therapy

Back in the Game Physical Therapy offers Shockwave Therapy, which is a cutting edge treatment option for treating many musculoskeletal conditions.  Shockwave Therapy is also known as extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT).  We use what we feel is the beset form of shockwave therapy, a PiezoWave2 machine using Myofascial Acoustic Compression Therapy (MYACT).

How does it work?  My MYACT works by emitting high energy acoustic waves, which are focused on the target tissues by the handpiece/applicator.  This is believed to cause:

  • Localized microtrauma that stimulates the body's natural healing processes.  The microtrauma increases local circulation and enhances the breakdown of calcifications.
  • Stimulates angiogenesis/neovascularization (new blood vessels) and neurogenesis (new nerve cells).

How painful is it?
It varies based on the condition and the patient tolerance. The therapist will communicate with you to make sure it is tolerable for you and adjust the intensity.  Patients will often report that the deep dull ache is very tolerable and hurts good.

How long is a treatment?  A typical treatment session consists of 1500-2000 beats, which takes around 5 minutes.

Are there any scientific studies supporting/refuting the effectiveness of shockwave therapy? https://elvationusa.com/publications/

How many body parts can I treat in one session?  Our experience has shown that the effectiveness of this treatment is best when low to medium energy is used, and one body area is treated in one session.
